The DPPC Commends the Parliament of Afghanistan for Passing the FY20 Budget and Leadership in the Fight Against Corruption
The U.S. - Afghanistan Democratic Peace and Prosperity Council (DPPC) commends the Parliament of Afghanistan for passing the FY20 budget and leadership in the fight against corruption. Acting on the recent findings of the Parliamentary National Defense Commission’s investigation that exposed rampant waste, fraud and corruption during the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan’s (GIROA) administration of the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces (ANDSF) contracting process, the elected body included language in the FY 2020 budget restricting GIROA’s authority to administer the bulk of the ANDSF contracting process. Corruption in the ANDSF contracting process threatens Afghanistan’s national security, military readiness and the health and well-being of soldiers. More broadly, corruption hampers Afghanistan’s efforts to promote economic development, entrepreneurship and job creation. We encourage the Parliament of Afghanistan to continue its anti-corruption efforts by conducting oversight of GIROA and holding it accountable for any misdeeds.
