DPPC Human Rights Report


The following is a list of atrocities that have occurred in Taliban-controlled Afghanistan. Each of these reports has been corroborated by trusted sources on the ground. Additional information is available upon request from the DPPC.


This report covers the period January 25 - February 7, 2022.



January 25, 2022, Herat, Extrajudicial Killing: Habib ul-Rahman Malekzada, a former government’s Chief of Police for Teora district of Ghor province, was killed by unknown gunmen in the afternoon. Abdul Wahid Hamas, the spokesperson for Ghor governor’s office, said that the victim was killed in front of his house in Herat province.


January 26, 2022, Helmand, Extrajudicial Killing: Dead body of a young man named Asadullah, who reportedly worked for security forces in the previous government, was found in Lashkar Gah city, the provincial capital of Helmand province. Rashed, provincial Director of Information and Culture (DoIC), said that the victim named Asadullah had gone missing two days ago as he was out with his friends.


January 27, 2022, Nangarhar, Extrajudicial Killing: A civilian was shot dead by Taliban forces in Rodato district of Nangarhar province. Family of the victim claim that he [the victim] had gone to the district for shopping where he was shot dead by the Taliban forces.


January 28, 2022, Kunduz, Extrajudicial Killing: Local sources in Kunduz province report that a former military officer and his brother were shot dead by unknown gunmen in Charikary village of Khan Abad district of the province. The gunmen according to the relatives of the victim were wearing military uniforms.


January 31, 2022, Kandahar, Extrajudicial Killing: A former police officer was killed in Kandahar province. A source in the provincial General Directorate of Intelligence (GDI) in the condition of anonymity said that Mohammad Tahir, a former police officer was killed by unknown gunmen.


February 2, 2022, Kapisa, Illegal Detention: Taliban forces broke into the residential house of a former military officer, Azam Khan, in Kapisa province. Video footage shows the Taliban forcing into Azam Khan’s house in Latif Khail village of Kohistan district of the province. They have arrested Azam’s son as they were not able to find Azam Khan himself.


February 3, 2022, Herat, Illegal Detention: A civil society activist was arrested by Taliban forces in Herat province. Family of Fayaz Ghori, a civil society activist claim that he was arrested by Taliban forces from the nearby governor’s office and is in an uncertain fate. They claim that the reason for his arrest remains unknown.
